THE “GREAT LUKIIKO” (PARLIAMENT)
The Opening of the “Lukiiko” is one of the most colorful events in the Kingdom. The event takes place in August every year.
Like the Monarch, it is the duty of Ssaabasajja Kabaka formally to open each new session of the Lukiiko.
His Majesty has never missed the Opening of Lukiiko ceremonies during his reign.
Ssaabasajja Kabaka has officially opened 25 sessions of the Lukiiko in his reign.
KABAKA’S BIRTHDAY
The Kabaka celebrates his birthday each year: 13 April marks the Birthday of Ssaabasajja Kabaka.
Kabaka’s birthday run marks the beginning of Ssaabasajja Kabaka’s Birthday celebrations. This marathon is always flagged off by Ssaabasajja Kabaka of Buganda in Mengo Palace grounds. Many people in the Kingdom come together to run for a cause. This race attracts the best runners from the country, musicians, artists, politicians, young, youth, elderly and people from the corporate world.
ACCESSION AND CORONATION
After the overthrow of the Milton Obote’s Government in 1971 by Idi Amin, at that time, all Kingdoms had been abolished and Uganda had become a Republic. The young Prince returned to Uganda to attend the burial of his father after President Idi Amin allowed the return of his remains from London where he died in 1969. After the burial, The Prince became the head of the Royal House of the Kingdom as “Ssaabatakka”.
